Southeast U.S. plagued With Tornadoes

A total of 27 tornadoes were reported Tuesday, with most of them touching down in Mississippi and one in New Orleans. Flood warnings have also been issued across the region.

The tornado that struck New Orleans on Tuesday killed at least one person, destroyed many homes and knocked down power lines. The latest severe weather event comes when the city is still trying to recover from Hurricane Ida, which struck last year.

The tornado actually touched down in the city and ravaged neighborhoods. Major damage was reported in Arabi, Gretna, and St Bernard Parish.

The President of St Bernard Parish said that five or six homes were totally destroyed and, although there were people in the homes at the time, all escaped injury.

In Arabi, a tornado blew off roofs and knocked down trees and power lines.

Power was out for more than 17,346 customers in Louisiana, 25,923 in Texas after tornadoes ravaged that state on Monday. More than 11,646 utility customers were without power in Mississippi. Nearly 8,000 customers in New Orleans were in the dark.

The storm front dumped heavy rain and buffeted the area with powerful winds through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The National Weather Service warned as many as 5 million people in the region to beware of severe weather.

School districts in the area canceled classes and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge closed its campus for a day.

The same storm system shredded Texas on Monday and Tuesday morning, with rain, hail, and tornadoes.

More than 33,000 customers in Wisconsin and 18,000 in Michigan were without power on Wednesday as the same storm system crashed into the Great Lakes area. Thunderstorms were expected on the East Coast on Wednesday, including in Virginia and the Carolinas.

These most recent events show that severe weather that can cause massive blackouts could continue on for several days, making it difficult for utility crews to repair damage and sustaining the blackouts.
