A circuit breaker is a switch that automatically stops the current of an overloaded electric circuit. A circuit breaker is a safety device for you and for your generator. The electrical company in your area, if you have one, is going to supply power to your home constantly. In the event that there is a surge or something that could be damaging to your electrical items the breakers would try to protect you. Basically the breaker has two positions listed as off and on. One direction will close the circuit thus allowing power to flow while the other will open the circuit and disrupt the service. As added protection and coverage if the breaker is supplied with too much energy it will “trip” the breaker and shut it off. If you go look at your main panel you’ll see them all in there protecting your home. Now most panels can use several different types of breakers to help make things easier for replacement. Generators a bit different so most manufacturers have decided to go with one type of breaker so that replacement requires that exact same type.

Most manufacturers use breakers on the generators and on the transfer switches as a safety precaution. Generac circuit breakers have a main breaker on the side of the generator and a breaker in the transfer switch. Pretty much all generators that we offer will be set up this way because it’s the easiest way to protect your investment. These breakers are able to handle a surge, like an air conditioner, just for a second or so. Any longer than that and the safety feature will be activated to avoid damaging the generator.
