As you ponder areas for improvement in 2016, you’re likely considering your health, career, or relationships. While these are certainly worthy of your effort in the New Year, why not think outside the box and add to your annual list of goals?

Be prepared for emergencies. Year after year, winter storms leave tens of thousands of U.S. residents without power, but more threats persist beyond that. For example, last month, extreme wind in the Northwest knocked out electricity for six days in Spokane, WA. This storm went on to put some without heat and lighting for two weeks and unfortunately, with temperatures in their teens. Additionally, manmade risks linger, such as the imminent attack on our nation’s electrical grid, as identified in Ted Koppel’s book (read more here).

We’re all in danger of losing power and for an unknown amount of time at one or more points throughout any year. Don’t take your chances of being without heat (or air), lighting, security systems, and use of other critical appliances when you need them most. Be prepared with a generator.

Clean your home (on the outside). The exterior of your home becomes a resting place for outdoor particles, such as pollen, grass, and mold. Not only is this buildup noticed by visitors to your home, it becomes a hazard to your siding or brick when stirred up by the wind or rain. Further, many of these particles are allergens for residents and can result in illness. Take mold for example; it’s important to clean your gutters to remove any debris that can eventually turn into mold and enter your exterior walls.

The best way to clean the outside of your home, as well as your driveway, deck, patio, outdoor furniture, and more, is with a pressure washer. Use one to keep your home clean and your family safe.

Reduce your energy consumption. Most everyone is always searching for ways to minimize their footprint and preserve our planet. One solution is through the reduction of energy consumption, which is easily accomplished with solar power. By implementing solar panels and eliminating CO2 emissions, you’ll be doing your part to protect the Earth. Plus, you’ll enjoy lower electric bills by becoming less reliant on the electrical grid.
