Four Air Cooled Generator Essentials To Always Have On Hand

When you need a generator, you really need it. That may be in a winter storm that knocks out power, when heat is necessary for comfort or even survival. Or it may be to power tools on a construction site, where a customer is demanding you finish the job at hand. No matter which situation may apply to you, a generator must work when you need it. Therefore, keep these four air cooled generator essentials on hand to ensure you have the emergency or backup power you require:

Maintenance kit. If you read our recent post, How to care for your generator, you understand the value of regular generator maintenance. Luckily, our generator manufacturers are a step ahead of us and provide everything we need to perform maintenance in one simple kit. Just make sure your kit contains plenty of oil and multiple oil filters. If not, pick up extra. (Find your generator’s maintenance kit here.)

Battery charger. Obviously a battery charger isn’t going to do you much good when the power is out. However, as part of your regular maintenance, you should be charging your battery (trickle charger) on your generator to ensure it will start in an emergency. Therefore, should you not be able to find your battery charger for maintenance, drop what you’re doing and go buy another.

Fuel. Whether gas, propane, or diesel, make sure you have adequate fuel for your generator on hand so that it can deliver the backup or emergency power you need. Refer to your owner’s manual for recommendations for your specific generator.

Finally, if you live in a region where winter temperatures drop below freezing, a cold weather kit is an additional must have. These include battery warmers, oil heaters, and other tools necessary for getting and keeping your generator running in cold weather.
