Generator Accessories
A generator, transfer switch, and fuel are the basic elements of a standby generator system. But generator accessories can enhance the performance and service life of your generator. There is an implied trust in the home standby generator system. The owner has made an investment in the system, and expects it to be available when needed. These are complex systems, and require some monitoring. Generator manufacturers now are adding remote monitoring capability to their units. These generator accessories can be as simple as a small remote display with indicator lights, or as complex as a wireless transmitter that uses cellular to report generator status back to your phone, or computer. The cost of the generator accessories you purchase can be considered an investment in your system and an investment well spent.
Maintenance Kits: One of the most important generator accessories you might need is a maintenance kit. Typically these kits include the replaceable, consumable components used in your generator. Spark Plug, air filter, oil filter, and oil are the service items included in a typical maintenance kit. Depending on your climate it may be to your benefit to use synthetic motor oil in your generator. Synthetic 5W-30 oil is recommended for use in all climates while the viscosity of the conventional oil used in your generator is determined by the climate extremes the unit is installed in.
Cold Weather Kits: Climate can impact more than the oil. Being exposed to the elements can affect your generators ability to start. Cold weather kits consisting of battery warming and carburetor warming elements are available. These kits have electric warming elements that are controlled by a thermostat and activate when the temp reaches the low end of its threshold.
Generator Pads: Installing your home standby generator presents the opportunity to add generator accessories. While it is acceptable to install a generator on a leveled bed of gravel, a flat concrete slab, or even the ground, a generator pad could give you a secure base on which to install your generator and protect your investment. These pads are made of formed concrete, with some having reinforcing fibers embedded into it to strengthen it. 3 pads are acceptable for general use, while many manufacturers are making 4 heavy duty pads for use in hurricane prone areas. The generator pads also may have mounting holes cast into them which will line up with corresponding holes and bolts in the generator, ensuring a secure and stable installation. Always check with the local authority having jurisdiction for the building and electrical codes pertaining to generator mounting and installation requirements.
